We braved the traffic just to watch and meet Karylle personally on a Saturday afternoon launch at Glorietta 5 Atrium in Makati. We’ve seen Karylle perfom onstage then from her previous concert guestings, the last time when she sang barefoot at PhilPop 2013‘s finals night interpreting for Lara Maigue’s entry “Sa ‘Yo Na Lang Ako.” And this song eventually made it to the self-titled album “K” released under Polyeast Records.

Karylle performs pop, dance and stage musical, primarily a versatile and multi-awarded singer. Karylle lights up TV screens everyday via the noontime show Showtime, enchants nightly as Cinderella onstage at the Resorts World Newport Performing Arts Theater and banners the Filipino Pride flag when she top billed the Pan-Asian musical series The Kitchen Musical.
K The Album
“Every album is a blessing because you get to share parts of yourself to more people. I hope people will enjoy the fruits of our labor,” says Karylle gratefully. Her new album “K” features the singer-actress-TV-host dabbling into different genres. She shows her fun side in the catchy pop tune and carrier single “Kiss You,” goes edgy in the modern upbeat tune “Bad Boys” (which also has a remix version by DJ MOD), turns sentimental in the ballad “Kapiling Kita,” offers pure love in 2013 Philpop entry “Sa’yo Na Lang Ako,” and pays tribute to her musical roots in “In My Own Little Corner” (from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella), among others.
This new album is a new chapter for Karylle as she collaborates with saxophonist Alvin Cornista again after recording OMG for the last album. She has written collaborations with singer-songwriter and album producer Kiko Salazar who also worked with her Mom’s album (Zsa Zsa Padilla’s Noon, Ngayon, Bukas, Kailanman.. Palagi), released under Polyeast Records. “I’m thankful because everyone in PolyEast has pushed me to finish this album this year,” appeals Karylle about being very busy with Showtime and Cinderella as she strive her best to release the new CD Lite.“Kapiling Kita” has been performed at the launch and we’re lucky to hear it live! I’m very outspoken about liking the melody, words, emotions and the entirety of the song penned by Kiko Salazar. “We were listening to it in Singapore when we did the My Girls Campaign for Adidas. Ramdam na ramdam ko na espesyal ito for him at feel ko rin sya. Ito ‘yung kinukwento ko na parang urong-sulong na nag-aagaw talaga yung damdamin at utak mo kase s’yempre you want to be wiser when you fall in love,” shares Karylle as she defends of not claiming it as her song. “I just try to think that I’m in that situation, parang kapag nasa play, hindi naman s’ya eksaktong nararamdam pero gets ko s’ya,” adds Karylle.
She has fully written the track for “Bad Boys” and collaborated with Kiko Salazar in the upbeat songs “Out Tonight” and “Kiss You”. We’ve also seen “Kiss You” performed live which has magnificent recall with the help from the fans in the audience. This is where Karylle tries them to sing the chorus parts of the song. Impressive how she interacts with the fans certifying that Karylle has a strong and loyal fan base directed towards her music.
Where did she get the inspiration in writing her own songs? “I recently wrote about rice and I got the inspiration from not wanting to eat kamote because I love rice. So it’s about the everyday things, little things. I like saying about anything and everything. The inspiration is just everywhere. It’s being not afraid to express yourself and twirl around,” reveals Karylle. I might as well be interested in listening to her rice song when she’s able to share it to people.Karylle also talked about missing live performances with her band. “I don’t know. It’s just different like we’re back to rehearsals, iba yung eksena ng nagbabanda ka. I don’t have a rock band or something, I wish I could. Iba yung feeling kase sa banda, laging may drama, exciting, kasama yung mga boys. Ibang feeling. It never goes away. Working with this album, I’m working with some of my old producers as well like Ito Rapadas and DJ MOD. Bumabalik yung mga nararamdaman ko noong nag-uumpisa pa lang ako,” asserts Karylle mentioning her love for live music. Nothing beats performing with a live band. She has been very grateful with all the musicians who selflessly share their souls and inspired her. Reasons, her band, namely Piox Asparen, Bojie Baraquiel, Derick Buenviaje, pastor Roi Buenviaje, Alwyn Cruz and Edwin Dimaranan.
Karylle is looking forward to perform a concert next year after Cinderella, please watch out for it soon. It will surely be a bigger and bolder one. But for now, there are many fundraising concerts that she has been performing in as support for the victims of typhoon Yolanda.
