It has been a great and fun evening speaking with Asia’s Acoustic Sweetheart, Sabrina at the MCA Music headquarters. Getting to know more about an artist through a blog con is one of the things I’ve been missing because of my day job. To discover the artist’s music, to widen my perspective to every artist’s vocal tone and to embrace the inner workings of an artist’s mind are some of the things I seek to share in this music blog. I’m proud to let you know that Sabrina has her humorous side that is just off your trolley, you-just-gotta- love-her-more-and-more!
Here is a sneak peek of the blog con happenings, video by Ver Jube.
Sabrina performs at the 2015 Asia Song Festival
“Sobrang saya noong nakita ko yung invitation, humaba ang hair ko,” tells Sabrina as she talks about this music festival that features the performances of a large number of popular idol groups from all over Asia. Aired through KBS, it was hosted by Busan Organizing Committee for Asia Song Festival, the City of Busan, Korean Music Contents Association, and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
“Upon receiving their invitation, nalaman kong meron silang basis for all the artist participants in the said music festival. Merong credibility ang imbitasyon nila. Nakatutuwang malaman na na-appreciate nila ang music ko at ang brand ko na “I Love Acoustic.” It serves as an assurance in my contribution to the music world.”
The Asia Song Festival aims to promote cultural exchange and enhance relations among countries in Asia, Sabrina represented the Philippines last October 11 at the Busan Asiad Main Stadium in Busan, South Korea. She performed alongside Asia’s top music acts like KPop artists EXO, GOT7, Red Velvet and B.T.S, NGT48 from Japan and William Chan from China.
“My all-original album is in the works and I already recorded five songs, all penned by myself. Pop ito at malayo ito sa usual na I Love Acoustic,” as she introduces her new original single “Hypnotized.” “Kapag narinig n’yo ang mga songs sa susunod na all-original album, makikita n’yo ang other side of Sabrina. Lahat isinusulat ko, pains and struggles, para kapag haharap ako masaya na ako. And we are all looking forward to the all-original album next year!
She performed “Hypnotized” aside from the track “Lost Stars” from the film “Begin Again.” But the highlight of the event was her collaboration with famous KPop group B1A4 onstage with their song “Lonely,” in which Sabrina performed the song in Korean. It was the group’s request for Sabrina to have a duet with them. Video below by Rappler.
The 45,000 audience at the stadium loved the duet that it endeared her to the Korean fans. “It’s amazing to witness a Korean production funded by their own government.”
Sabrina: Fondest memories in recording 8 albums of I Love Acoustic
“In each album, mayroong 18 songs, ganyan karami. Lahat ng recording sessions namin masaya,” narrates Sabrina as she recalls the people she has worked with under MCA Music. “Lahat sila parang naging tropa ko na parang hindi na trabaho, sobrang gaan nilang ka-trabaho. Tapos mas excited ako sa recording process kase pwede na ako magsuggest ng mga tono at adlib na gusto ko. They wanted me to grow as an artist, that’s the best part I think.”
“Now I’m already 25 (years old), marami na akong napagdaaan. May maganda at pangit, mas alam ko na i-handle ang sarili ko ngayon. Natutuhan kong maging matapang, to stay on the positive side and to share my opinions like we can disagree, pero hindi tayo mag-aaway.”
In this recent intimate blog con with Sabrina, I find it impressive how she remains consistent in being grateful and being thoughtful beyond all of her success. We’re lucky to share with her quality time, light conversations and more tawanan moments, ‘yung bihira lang pero well-spent.
The songs in I Love Acoustic 8
She just released her latest album “I Love Acoustic 8” which debuted at #1 on iTunes Philippines and Indonesia and also on Top 10 of iTunes Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. It includes Sabrina’s acoustic-fied versions of current hits like: “Thinking Out Loud” (Ed Sheeran), “Bang Bang” (Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj), “All About That Bass” (Meghan Trainor), “Love Me Like You Do” (Ellie Goulding), “Uptown Funk” (Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars), “Chandelier” (Sia), “I Really Like You” (Carly Rae Jepsen), “Blank Space” (Taylor Swift), “Sugar” (Maroon 5), “Love Me Harder” (Ariana Grande), “Style” (Taylor Swift), “Heroes” (Alesso feat. Tove Lo), “Lost Stars” (Adam Levine), “The Heart Wants What It Wants” (Selena Gomez), “Cool Kids” (Echosmith), “I’m Not The Only One” (Sam Smith), “I Want You To Know” (Selena Gomez) and “One Last Time” (Ariana Grande).
We asked her to choose five songs among these and describe the songs mean to her. Video above.
- “All About That Bass” – the debut single by American artist Meghan Trainor, a song about feeling confident, self-empowerment and that size doesn’t really matter. She dedicates this song to herself because of some weight issues.
- “Lost Stars” – about people trying to find their way, sung by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and co-star Keira Knightley in the film, “Begin Again.” “Minsan kase nawawala rin ako. I lose track but sure to find my focus again.”
- “Thinking Out Loud” – the first song to hit 500 million plays on Spotify, penned by Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge, a song behind an everlasting love inspired by prevailing contexts.
“As you all know, I have a very happy relationship and dedicate this to my only one,” as she denotes maintaining a long and contented relationship.

- “I Know I’m Not the Only One” – Sam Smith’s soulful single from his multiple-Grammy-winning “In the Lonely Hour” album, a song about being heartbroken and a cheating heart. She’s thinking of someone to dedicate this song but she tells us, she just loves this song so much. “Masaya naman ang relationship ko pero kapag napapakinggan ko sya, nalulungkot rin ako. ‘Yan ang effect ng music.”5. “Bang Bang” – a huge hit by pop powerhouse artists Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj.“It’s a song about girl power,” says Sabrina.
She also shared some difficulty in covering Taylor Swift songs, “Kase ang singing style n’ya ay malayo sa singing style ko. For “I Love Acoustic 8,” she (Taylor Swift) has two songs kaya dusa talaga ‘yan. Pero kapag natapos ko na i-record, it’s a good thing, it’s a relief.”
”I Love Acoustic 8” has already become the top number 1 at the top album charts of iTunes Philippines. “First time ko ito na nag-#1 ako sa iTunes Indonesia and iTunes Philippines kaya super picture ako. Number 7 pa lang, masaya na ako. We’re very happy na abroad ang market namin pero iba kapag sa sariling bansa,” giddily tells Sabrina her blessings in an online market.
Now on its 8th volume, her “I Love Acoustic” series plus “Acoustic Love Notes” has sold more than 300,000 units all over Asia and are certified Platinum and Gold in countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia and also released in Korea and other Asian countries digitally.
Sabrina: Not as an artist
“I think, I’d be a scriptwriter or a story writer,” as she shares she had interviews from companies for these kinds of jobs. It’s scriptwriting for a movie, they actually offered two positions for me but I couldn’t accept the job because of conflicting schedule in my singing. Maybe, that’d be my second career besides performing and singing.”
Sabrina’s “I Love Acoustic 8” is now out on CDs at Astroplus and Astrovision outlets, through digital downloads via Spinnr and iTunes and streaming via Spinnr, Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, Guvera and Rdio. Download or stream the album via this link: http://getmusic.lnk.to/ILoveAcoustic8Em
