New EP Rotonda and 20 years Of Gloc-9′s unstoppable force in rap music

The multi-awarded rap icon Gloc-9 is celebrating his 20th year in the Philippine music industry as he marks this milestone with a brand new EP entitled “Rotonda” released under Universal Records. After his one year contract with Star Music and the release of the album “Sukli,” he recently renews ties with his former label, Universal Records as he proudly recalls remarkable working moments with the record label.

Gloc-9 -Rotonda (3)

The launch of his new EP creates an avenue for me to get back to covering press cons after quite some time. And yes, I finally said yes to Ms. Grace Foronda’s invitation and I’m happy that I am able to squeeze in good times again such as this before work. I miss lining up with some media friends for light snacks and just talk about the traffic and how busy we were these days.

Gloc-9 celebrates two decades

“Siguro isa lang ‘yung magkaroon ka ng sariling kanta pero ang pagiging totoo mo at kapag nakikita ng tao na hindi ka namamlastik lang dahil gusto mo lang sumikat. Ako’y nangarap lang din, nangangarap pa rin na rap artist ngayon. Iyon siguro ‘yung nakita nila na nakakarelate sila. I try my best na hindi ako magmukhang isang taong mahirap lapitan,” answers Gloc-9 on how he achieved longevity in his career. I don’t know if there are really fundamental steps to a successful long-term career in the music industry but all I know is that music is in Gloc-9’s DNA.

Mandiriwa: Joey Ayala at Ang Bagong Lumad The Concert

I’ll start with Joey Ayala at Ang Bagong Lumad concert, #Mandiriwa2017 this time around. Had some hiatus from writing for some reason. I think it’s practically normal for people like me who feels tired at work and has no aptitude to write and generate new content. Now, I’m trying again.

Joey Ayala Mandiriwa 2017 (33)

I should be proud to show up and share with you this engaging concert by a music hero whose music saved his life. Joey Ayala with his band Ang Bagong Lumad just performed at the Music Museum for the first time in 25 years. “Mandiriwa: Joey Ayala at Ang Bagong Lumad (The Concert)” is presented by Vandals Entertainment and Gabi Na Naman Productions.

Popularly known for his environmental ethnic folk genre, the legendary singer-songwriter proves his music is still relevant, insightful and ceaseless in giving us hope while encompassing many different styles.

His faithful admirers jam-packed the venue to listen a concert with distinct Filipino sound and to watch the interaction of instruments ranging from traditional kulintang ensemble (a row of small, horizontally-laid gongs that function melodically, accompanied by larger, suspended gongs and drums) to hegalong (a two-stringed lute also known as kudyapi) merged with modern instrumentation of drums, bass and guitar. It’s a fusion of contemporary and indigenous musical orchestration.

Joey Ayala’s perceptive and humorous socio-political commentary is also impressive, youthful and relatable. He is the Mandiriwa, a warrior of truth through the power of his diverse thoughts and artistic words.

The VJP Music Roll Reissue

It’s been awhile since I published a new Music Roll but this time is sort of special since this month’s music roll is my own creation with just a little help. Thanks to my editor, Jovelyn Javier, for contributing us the story about Ang Bandang Shirley.

VJP-Music-Roll-April-2017-1000-web

Getting on with it, I’m sharing with everyone some momentous live performances I’ve come across from the first few months of the year — the impressive theatrical re-run of “Dirty Old Musical,” the exquisitely presented combination of alternative rock and string orchestra in Camerawall’s reunion gig and an album launch tinged with an emotional closing at Blue Bay Walk by Ang Bandang Shirley with a new album that could easily be anyone’s “favorite.”
