Everybody loves resolutions but eventually learns to hate it because there are no results. It usually starts bright and positive but in the long run becomes difficult.
All the while, I thought attending #iBlog14 recently is enough to get me back to writing but I was wrong. Then I reviewed this POST again and reminded myself that I should invest more time in what I would like to do every day.
New Year Goal Setting
Since it’s a new year again, I started thinking about what goals I’d like to set for this year. For me, writing goals isn’t about aiming too high. I know I dwindle on sharing things here on the blog, and instead take things over to Instagram and pretend to write the next day but to be realistic, it’s still lacking. Definitely a bad habit to end 2018.
This year, it’s about setting new goals, creating calendar plans, becoming better and sticking to it. So at the start of the year, I’ve been reading “Steal like an Artist” by Austin Kleon and it says “You don’t put yourself online only because you have something to say — you can put yourself online to find something to say.” This very phrase kicked an inspiration and I was compelled to write this entry now and fill out a new page.
I should stop spending so much time in my head and start working. It feels perfect to start with untimely but interesting backlogs as my mind is swamped with many things to share. Let’s begin with this workable plan and say hello to a new blogger me.
With all the changes that have been happening internally within this blog and the constant evolution of music, one thing I recently had to accept is the disbandment of the Filipino pop-rock band IV of Spades (IVOS).
I’ve watched them live the first time during the #RoadToLightMusicFestival at the Music Museum. Experiencing them playing their hits on stage was one of my most unforgettable concert experience of 2018. I remembered listening to them on Spotify since the time “Mundo” started to trend in social media networks.
Introduction to IV of Spades
IV of Spades debuted in 2014, with former vocalist Unique Salonga, but now only with 3 members namely Zildjian Benitez (bass/lead vocals), Blaster Silonga (lead guitarist/vocals), and Badjao de Castro (drums/vocals).
According to an article, their first major breakout was joining the Wanderband competition in 2015 as they released their song “Hey Barbara.” They also performed the following year at the Wanderland Music and Arts Festival. Video below by IV OF SPADES.
Speaking to scoutmag.ph, the band said that playing during the Scout Music Fest was life-changing for them as they emerged to impress all kinds of audiences. You can check out this article HERE.
The truth is, to which I agree, is that “IV of Spades entered into an era where both millennials and Gen Z-ers obsess over vinyl, analog photography, old cartoons, and retro aesthetics,” tells another article on the Internet.
IV of Spades struggled to keep up with expected results and awards including Air Asia and Spotify Asia’s “Dreams Come True” Champion, New Artist and Best Bandarito Performance for MYX Awards 2018, nomination for Best Southeast Asian Act in MTV Europe Music Awards and their monster hit “Mundo” peaking at #1 on Spotify Global Charts and #1 on Spotify Philippines Daily Charts.

IVOS: Band on the rise
The IV of Spades members are talented artists meant to play in different places and stages. You can see clearly through their performances that they’re meant to drive towards longevity. But in a span of a few years, the band faces transitional phase after the disbandment occurred with reasons only the members can unfold.
The unexpected exit of Unique Salonga from IV of Spades marks the coming of a new IVOS. IV of Spades went to release their first song as a trio with the song “In My Prison” while Unique Salonga debuts a solo concert at the KIA Theatre, now New Frontier Theatre.
The new IV of Spades also opened the stage for Panic at the Disco’s Pray for the Wicked Tour in Manila last October 2018. Video below courtesy of Danwill Albayda. Recently, they also collaborated with Shanti Dope for an Exclusive Coke Studio Collab.
They have two (2) more songs released entitled “Bata, Dahan-Dahan” and “Take That Man,” that I describe as songs that will surely boost your mood and make your day. With the new songs, I still love their signature funky tunes and powerhouse new wave revival sound. Video below by IV OF SPADES.
IVOS in its new form may look like incomplete but the three continue to do well in every performance. You won’t be looking for what’s missing; but instead, you will be enlightened how they can still fill up big halls and venues to vastly expand their audience with their fresh-faced pop-rock.
As they say, change is constant and challenging at the same time. As we go through changes, we are bound to keep learning and growing as well. We can always choose a better story, it’s the opportunity to embrace new experiences and continue to flourish.
