Noel Cabangon has proven his staying power with this new record, Acoustic Noel. Songs included are fans’ most requested songs and refreshing take on 12 modern classics. Inspired by the chart-topping and multi-platinum albums “Byahe” and “Tuloy Ang Byahe,” Acoustic Noel covers OPM classics from various decades. Noel Cabangon was one of the artists who can make us smile or cry within the context of an authentic performance in a seamlessly acoustic mood.
Recent performances were sold out. We’ve seen him perform jazz. His accompaniment with the orchestra is one of the most memorable for me. With his version of Rizal Underground’s “Bilanggo” in this album, you can listen to the generous outside-rock element of him but we still wanted to see him rock onstage soon.

Acoustic Noel in the making
“The team of Universal Records, we really sat down and chose the songs that will really be easily marketed, na papatok sa mga tao, without losing the flavor of acoustic na style ko, masarap pa rin pakinggan,” shares Noel in his media launch press con last 06 Feb 2014. They were bombarded with a lot of songs from fans on Facebook. “One of the most requested songs was Huwag Mo Nang Itanong and then Pagdating ng Panahon, Himala, Bilanggo. When we looked at the requests, puro from the 90’s.” More photos from the media launch HERE.
The songs choices
Ogie Alcasid’s classic “Nandito Ako” is the carrier single of the album. It also includes Rivermaya’s “Himala,” Basil Valdez’s “Araw, Gabi,” Aiza Seguerra’s “Pagdating Ng Panahon,” Parokya Ni Edgar’s “Harana,” Rizal Underground’s “Bilanggo,” Eraserheads’ “Huwag Mo Nang Itanong,” APO’s “Tuyo Nang Damdamin” and Asin’s “Itanong Mo Sa Mga Bata.” Noel’s previously-recorded songs, “Nag-iisa, Wala Ka Na” and “Awit ng Bahaghari,” were given new versions in the album. And recognizing a deep appreciation of the musicians who backed up Noel in this album, he has a fascinating sound.
“‘Nag-iisa, Wala Ka Na,’ para kasing kulang sa exposure iyong song na ‘yon kaya sabi ko na lang na uulitin ko na lang. Iyong album kung saan iyon kasama very limited lang ‘yong nailabas. I have to re-do it kasi kelangang bumagay sa konsepto ng album and isa pa kelangang may social relevance kaya sinama ko rin iyong Awit ng Bahaghari, para sa Yolanda experience,” states Noel.
Noel talks about OPM Summit
“It’s timely that we have to discuss the future of OPM and this will involve all the stakeholders particularly from the creators’ side – the labels, composers, PARI, KBP, networks. This will be a very important event. What we really want is to define the roadmap, where do we want to bring OPM, where do we navigate. And one of the objectives also is to get the commitment of the stakeholders to really push for OPM at this time of digital age, it’s a very challenging time.”
Noel’s take in producing original songs
With the advances in technology including personalized music because of portable and affordable music players and inexpensive recording equipment which allowing artists to create music and share it to the world anytime. This has made a significant impact on the way music are marketed, produced and ultimately heard. These are the dramatic changes happening in the music industry now.
“One should be able to adapt to changes to enable him to reach out to a bigger audience, especially to the young,” said Noel pertaining to the market’s persistent changes, a singer must be able to adapt his music to reach for a wider appreciation.
“Sa generation na ito, ang hirap magtulak ng bagong kanta. I think it really takes a lot of creativity. Mahirap na ang magtinda ngayon kasi unang-una iyong device mo ngayon. CD is still there but to the young people now some of them do not already know what CD is. Like the MP3 and with modern technology you can now download, create your own playlist kasi naka-stream lang iyong mga kanta. You don’t need to come up with an album, isang kanta lang,” tells Noel as he points out the challenges on coming up with really great material for writing songs.
“Iyong challenge doon is that while it is true that there is a venue for everyone to allow people to listen to their music, to their creation, kapag sinama mo iyon sa YouTube kasama ka sa sea of music and iyong pagpipilian ng tao, kung hindi ganoon ka-distinct hindi ka mapapansin. Ang dami-dami. Kung bumili ka sa tindahan, ang daming pagpipilian. Nariyan ang iTunes, mymusicstore, OPM2Go, madaming choices. Unlike before when you do an album, apat na possible hit songs larga na ‘yang album mo,” ends Noel as he encourages striving toward efficiency beyond technology.
