Sam Concepcion made his return to the live music scene at his first ever solo concert at the Museum Musem last 15 Mar 2014. This isn’t the old “Little Big Star” champion Sam or “Peter Pan” Sam; this is the new and the improved Sam Concepcion!
The crowd was screaming for Sam who was wearing black sleeveless hoodie as he enters the stage. “Samters” (Sam’s fan club) go gaga over Sam once he started performing. He opened the concert with songs from his recent album “Infinite.”
As part of the audience, seeing songs from the album being performed live is my favorite part of the concert. Seeing him performing the title track “No Limitations,” “Rescue You,” “Panalangin,” “She Drives Me Crazy,” and ‘Kontrabida” more truly define how much Sam has evolved as an artist.
Opening acts were Neo Domingo, 5AZ1, Allen Sta. Maria and Madelaine. There was also a romantic moment at the concert when Sam serenaded and asked rumored girlfriend Jasmine Curtis Smith to sing parts of the song “Mahal na Mahal.” She was at the audience with friends showing her support for Sam.
“Di ka Nag-iisa,” his new single from the album is lovingly dedicated to the victims of super typhoon Yolanda. Fans were so impressed by his solo version of the song as he also performed rap verses originally done by flip-top rap artist, Dello. Sam’s performance of this song below is courtesy of JD Zee.
One of the concert highlights would be his collaboration number with X Factor Philippines grand champion KZ Tandingan with the song “Say Something.” I have to admit that it’s one outstanding rendition of the song originally by Great Big World and Christina Aguilera. KZ on the other hand also perfomed a solo singing Katy Perry’s “Roar” with Filipino rap verses, proving her versatility and prowess. Having KZ Tandingan on board at the concert was indeed a smart move for Sam. Video of Sam and KZ’s duet below is courtesy of JD Zee.
He went through with his hits and of course everyone was on their feet when it was time to perform ‘Dati,’ a collaboration song with Tippy Dos Santos that won the grand prize in 2013 PhilPop Music Festival. Sam has been so blessed with beautiful songs from the PhilPop Music Festival as he interpreted songs from the competition in two consecutive years. Video below by Happy Dos Santos.
Sam was at the top of his element as he sang the Eraserheads medley like a rock star in his own right with songs “Ligaya,” “Alapaap,” “Huling El Bimbo” and “With a Smile,” as well as performing like the King of Pop with Michael Jackson hits and breakdance with a limitless high energy through the rest of the show.
But the screams got louder and the ladies came out on stage as Sam prepares his audience for some “kilig” serenading moments with his take of Coldplay’s “Yellow” and John Legend’s “All of Me.” And with everything going onstage, you definitely didn’t want to miss anything!
Overall, No Limitations was the crucial transition for Sam. He plunged entirely into becoming a total live performer as he has found the focus to do it with full justice. The concert was a clear definition of Sam’s great talents. Perhaps one day, Sam Concepcion will be one of the country’s most riveting and successful pop icons. With his well-rounded performing talents, Sam Concepcion is truly a name to watch out for.
